Toronto and Nipissing Railway Pictures
« on: January 07, 2009, 11:34:56 AM »
I was surfing around the Interweb and Narrow Gauge Heaven.

I found some interesting pictures from Narrow Gauge Through the Bush - Rod Clarke:

The colour rendition of the Toronto and Nipissing Fairlie type 0-6-6-0 "Shedden" built by Avonside of Bristol in 1872 which is on the cover of the book.

The Toronto and Nipissing Railway Fairlie "Shedden" by Avonside 1871 in a very picturesque setting.

And...

Toronto Grey and Bruce Railway "Mono" built by Avonside in 1871.

Beautiful!

I wonder if Rod is selling prints of these pictures seperatly from the book?  I'm sure they'd sell very well.

It was in my home town that one of the founders was killed. He was squeezed by the train against the station platform and died.

A prior tome called "Narrow Gauge For Us" has more tasty pics.

I think Russ was a reseller for the book. Not sure how many are left if any. Although to me anything larger than three foot is mainline.  ::) ;D

Hi Ferd et Alan,

I see that Russ is Webmaster for Rod's webpage: http://www.narrowgaugethroughthebush.com/  The book can be bought on-line from there.

The primary source for the book, which supported the initial publication is the Credit Valley Railway Company.  They have it too.

I was lucky to see an early draft of the book at a SORBB meet a few years ago, and I pestered Rod to get it done and published.  I was able to get my copy directly from the writer and received it with autograph.   ;D

John Shedden is the man for whom both the locomotive and the town are named.  There's a curse or jinx related to the name.  He died as a result of an accident at Cannington on 16 May 1873 when he was crushed between moving cars on the Toronto and Nipissing Railway line and the station platform.
